FC Zurich salvages an important point at home against Lausanne-Sport thanks to two goals in the last five minutes.
The 2-2 draw means FCZ remain five points clear of the seventh-placed Vaud side in the race for a place in the championship round.
FCZ made far too little of their possession for a long time. Two actions by Mounir Chouiar were the best the hosts had to offer until almost into stoppage time. It was only with their backs to the wall after going 2-0 down in the 77th minute and through direct play that Zurich embarrassed Lausanne.
Steven Zuber made it 2-1 in the 90th minute after a long pass into the opposition half was misjudged by Lausanne goalkeeper Karlo Letica and his front men. And the equalizer five minutes later came from a free kick and a header that benefited goalscorer Lindrit Kamberi.
The fact that Benjamin Mendy had not been on the pitch for several minutes at the time of Zurich's great comeback was symptomatic. The Frenchman, part of the 2018 world champion team, did not play an unfortunate role for the first time since his arrival in Zurich. He was at fault for the 0:1 in the 5th minute with an uncontrolled pass in his own penalty area, which curiously ended up in Yanick Brecher's goal via Jamie Roche. Shortly before, a mistake by Mendy had already led to a dangerous attack by Lausanne. The robust full-back, who had only avoided a sending-off last weekend through leniency, made a sluggish, sometimes overtaxed impression.
Before the 0:2, however, the mistake happened on the other side of the FCZ defense. Mariano Gomez lost the ball to the lively Aliou Baldé, who somewhat fortunately set up Alban Ajdini's goal with a solo run. This two-goal lead after 77 minutes was fortunate in view of the share of play. Nevertheless, it was not illogical, as Lausanne, who were well prepared by former FCZ coach Ludovic Magnin, were more consistent in all their actions than Zurich - until FCZ's final furioso.
