In surprisingly good weather on Friday afternoon in the canton of Glarus, the parade made its way from Näfels to Mollis to the site of the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival. A total of 66 groups and delegations took part - including wrestling king Kilian Wenger.
The wrestling king of 2010 was part of the group from Frauenfeld, where he ascended the throne out of nowhere. Together with the Apple Queen, he handed out apples to the thousands of spectators on the Glarus parade route. The legendary Glarus skier Vreni Schneider, who waved to the crowds on a float, was also applauded.
The groups made their way to Mollis with the charm of a carnival procession. The Glarus schoolchildren, who were off school on Friday because of the ESAF, blew soap bubbles, the Glarus circus Mugg performed with a mobile circus ring and the sports students showed off their individual skills.
After the festival site had been hit by heavy rain the day before, the sun surprisingly made an appearance on Friday. However, further downpours are forecast for Saturday. This would make it one of the few wet ESAFs - the last time it rained was in Lucerne in 2004.
