Marquez becomes Mexico's national coach after the World Cup

Mexico's long-serving captain and current assistant coach Rafael Marquez will be promoted to head coach after the World Cup this summer as planned.

"His contract has been signed," announced sports director Duilio Davino.

The former FC Barcelona defender will take over from Javier Aguirre, who will leave his post after the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Aguirre was already Mexico's national coach at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups. Marquez will now lead the team to the 2030 World Cup.
