Solar power still has a lot of room for improvement in Switzerland. Currently, 10 percent of the solar potential on roofs is being used, as the Energy Reporter online platform from Energy Switzerland and Geoimpact shows. There are cantonal differences.

The front runner is Appenzell Innerrhoden. Here, 16 percent of roofs that are suitable for solar power production are also used for this purpose. Second place goes to the canton of Lucerne with 15 percent. Third place is shared by the cantons of St. Gallen, Thurgau and Appenzell Ausserrhoden with 14% each.
Bringing up the rear are Basel-Stadt, Geneva and Graubünden. Here, only 7 percent of suitable roofs are used for solar power production. Uri and Valais are also below the national average with 8 percent.
The Energy Reporter shows the development of the energy transition in the Swiss municipalities and cantons. Among other things, the platform uses publicly available data on electric cars and renewable electricity production.
