The typhoon headed towards Taiwan with wind gusts of up to 178 kilometers per hour before hitting the district of Taitung. When "Podul" made landfall in south-eastern China early Thursday morning (local time), it had already weakened to a severe tropical storm, according to media reports.

More than 8,000 people were evacuated in Taiwan, dozens of trees were blown down and there was also flooding. All domestic flights were canceled on Wednesday on the island of 23 million inhabitants, as were dozens of international flights. More than 63,000 households were still without power. Train services were also affected.

According to a report by the Chinese state news agency Xinhua, "Podul" made landfall for the second time on Thursday morning in the province of Fujian in the district of Zhangpu. According to the national weather station, it was moving at a speed of 108 kilometers per hour.

Researchers warn that man-made climate change will further increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts and floods.
