  • 14 nurses from the same maternity ward are pregnant at the same time in a US hospital.
  • HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in the US state of Wisconsin shared pictures of the expectant mothers and reported on their solidarity.
  • The obstetricians' babies are all expected to be born between May and fall.

A baby boom in the maternity ward is not normally newsworthy. If it weren't for the fact that all of the joyfully expecting babies are employees of the hospital: An incredible 14 obstetricians at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in the US state of Wisconsin are pregnant at the same time and are currently making headlines.

Most of the nurses at the Women and Infants Center deliver other babies every day - and soon their own. According to the clinic, all of the women are expecting their babies this year, and the due dates are all between May and fall. Photos show the pregnant women posing next to each other on the ward with their baby bumps.

"This is an incredible full-circle moment for many of our nursing staff," says Amy Bardon, head of the center, describing the curious situation in a statement. Many of the women are giving birth for the first time. "Each of these women was already a baby expert in her own way, but for many of them, their own experience of caring for babies - and mothers - is now deepened."

"A bit of a shock"

It was "a bit of a shock": This is how Ashlyn Short describes to "USA Today" the moment she realized how many colleagues were pregnant at the same time. She herself is already expecting her fifth child and, as she says, is on hand to offer advice and support to her fellow pregnant women.

Many of the women had already been close friends before, both professionally and privately. The pregnancies have strengthened these bonds even further. "We're like one big family, but the fact that so many of us are pregnant this year really surprised us," commented Ashley Schiles, one of the pregnant women, on TV.

"Everyone is pregnant!"

What is special is not only how many colleagues are pregnant at the same time - but also how they support each other. During the pregnancy and also during the birth, they are looked after by their colleagues and friends from the team. "This close connection creates a feeling of security and trust," says head Amy Bardon.

The hospital released the news in time for National Nurses Week and around Mother's Day - including group photos of the smiling pregnant women in their scrubs. Many patients and other women giving birth take the baby boom with humor, as Ashlyn Short reports: "People walk through the corridor and say: 'There's a pregnant woman, there's another one - everyone's pregnant!"
