In order to restore the monument, "which was not in good condition before 2019, as quickly as possible", considerable donations are still needed, the authority responsible for the construction work explained on Thursday. So far, support has been received from around 340,000 donors from 150 different countries.
One year after its reopening, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris has seen a record number of visitors: according to the Diocese of Paris, more than eleven million people have visited the famous Gothic masterpiece since then. After being closed for five years, the church reopened in December 2024 following a devastating fire in April 2019.
Before the fire, the annual number of visitors to the cathedral was between nine and ten million. In order to preserve the atmosphere of prayer during services, the number of visitors entering was reduced from 50 to 30 per minute.
Some changes are planned for 2026: Several chapels will be redesigned and the six contemporary stained glass windows by artist Claire Tabouret are to be installed in the south aisle by the end of the year.
