The Valais State Council has requested a loan of CHF 15 million for one of the priority construction sites of the third Rhone correction in Raron. This amount will be used to finance safety work, including the acquisition of land.

However, the 15 million must first be approved by the Grand Council. The work is planned on the territory of the municipalities of Raron and Baltschieder, more precisely on 1.3 kilometers between the threshold of Giblätt and the bridge of St. German, as the canton announced on Thursday.

The construction work is intended to secure the bank on the left bank near the bridges of the new transalpine rail link (NRLA). Selective interventions are also planned on the right bank above the bridge in order to increase the hydraulic capacity of the section.

Of the CHF 15 million that will be submitted to the Grand Council, the canton's net share is estimated at CHF 6.3 million. The Federal Office for the Environment and the Federal Roads Office are to contribute CHF 8.3 million. The share of the Valais municipalities amounts to CHF 300,000.

The third Rhone correction is the largest flood protection project in Switzerland. It stretches over 162 kilometers, from the source of the Rhone to its mouth in Lake Geneva. As this is an extraordinarily large project, federal support is being secured with a separate commitment credit. This amounts to CHF 306 million.
