The sheriff's office in Valencia County received a 911 call early Saturday morning from a young man who stated "that he had killed his family," police said Sunday. When officers arrived at the scene in the town of Belen, "the 16-year-old was leaving the house with his hands up and heavily intoxicated".

Inside the house, officers then discovered four bodies with gunshot wounds: a 42-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman and two boys aged 16 and 14. A representative of the Belen authorities said that the victims were the parents and two brothers of the suspect. The 16-year-old is charged with four counts of murder, according to police.

Gun violence is widespread

Gun violence is an everyday problem in the USA, where there are more firearms than inhabitants. According to the activist group Gun Violence Archive, there have already been at least 484 gun attacks in the US this year with four or more victims.

Attempts to tighten the lax gun laws regularly fail due to opposition from conservative Republicans and the powerful gun lobby.
