The Graubünden government has commissioned the University of Teacher Education Graubünden (PHGR) to create a trilingual, digital civics teaching aid for secondary level ll. The "Civica" project will cost CHF 1.71 million.

The new teaching material comprises various modules and is intended to impart basic knowledge about the Swiss and Grisons state, the government wrote in a press release on Thursday. The aim is to arouse interest in politics in general, political rights, political processes and political offices.

The new teaching material also fits in very well with the "500 years of the Free State of the Three Leagues" anniversary, which is being celebrated throughout the year in the canton with its "living trilingualism".

There are three official languages in Graubünden: German, Romansh and Italian. At German-speaking elementary school, Italian and Romansh are taught as first foreign languages, depending on the region. Conversely, German is the first foreign language. English is only added as a second foreign language from Year 5 onwards. French is only offered as an optional subject in secondary school.
