Around 188,000 people have been evacuated in the North African country of Morocco due to heavy rainfall and flooding. This was announced by the Moroccan government today. Residents in the affected areas have been moved to other locations and emergency shelters. Several provinces in the north-west have been declared disaster areas. At least four people have lost their lives in recent weeks.

The authorities have spent the past few days assessing the extent of the destruction in the affected areas. The government has launched an aid program with a budget of the equivalent of 276 million euros to support the region. For the time being, lessons will be held virtually at schools in the affected areas.

As recently as December, 37 people lost their lives after heavy rainfall and flooding in Morocco. After flash floods, rescuers pulled survivors and victims out of the masses of water and searched for the missing. The rain followed years of severe drought with little rainfall in Morocco.
