In total, he fired an estimated 50 to 100 shots in the Inner West district, police said.
Two hours after the gun attack began, police arrested the 60-year-old in an apartment above a store. The suspect was taken to hospital due to injuries sustained during his arrest, the police added.
One man had suffered a gunshot wound in the attack. He had taken himself to hospital and his condition was serious, the police said. 19 other people were treated for wounds caused by shattered glass and other fragments after the shooting. Some of them were admitted to hospital.
The police investigation was ongoing. Firearm attacks are relatively rare in Australia. Automatic and semi-automatic weapons have been banned there since a gunman shot dead 35 people in Port Arthur on the island of Tasmania in 1996.
