Around 22 percent of listed companies worldwide have well-founded CO2 reduction targets. These companies want to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.

This is the result of a new study by the US financial services provider MSCI. Around 9,000 listed companies from all over the world were included in the analysis, including some Swiss companies.

Compared to the same period last year, the proportion of companies with CO2 targets on a scientific basis has risen by eight percentage points. More than two thirds of the 30 largest companies on the Swiss stock exchange now have such targets.

Nevertheless, the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement seems a long way off. According to MSCI, only 11 percent of companies worldwide are currently operating in line with the target.
