A 30-year-old man broke into the same house in Zurich twice at night in 2022. He didn't steal anything, but both times he violently attacked women sleeping in the room. He was unable to explain why he did this before the Zurich High Court on Wednesday.

He had needed money and wanted to steal something, the accused told the court. On those two nights, a window had been open and he had broken in. He had not expected anyone to be in the apartment. When the woman in question woke up, he had acted "out of reflex". He had no intention of hurting or even killing her.
The incidents took place in July and October 2022. Both times, the man attacked the waking woman. He choked one of them and covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming. According to the indictment, this put her life in danger. Both times he fled without any loot.
The district court sentenced him to nine years' imprisonment in 2023 for attempted intentional homicide and other offenses. The defendant challenged the sentence. He wants to be acquitted of at least the main charge. The prosecution is seeking a far-reaching confirmation of the first-instance verdict. The High Court will hand down its verdict in the early evening.
