"Extraordinary thunderstorms" occurred yesterday evening in the province of Safi, which is located on the Atlantic coast south of Rabat in northern Africa, reported the state agency MAP. This was followed by massive flash floods within a short space of time. 14 people were injured.
Rescuers pulled survivors and victims out of the masses of water and searched for missing persons. The emergency services tried to help residents and secure areas, MAP reported. According to local reports, dozens of people were initially treated in hospital but then released.
Photos and videos from the affected areas showed entire neighborhoods under water. In the old town of Safi, dozens of houses and stores were temporarily under water. Some cars were also swept away by the masses of water. School lessons were suspended for three days.
