Both people were hypothermic but not injured, wrote the Obwalden cantonal police in a statement on Saturday night. The rescue service attended to them on site.

According to the police, the accident occurred at 5.15 p.m. on Friday. The driver lost control of the vehicle for as yet unexplained reasons. The passing fire department commander from the municipality of Lungern observed the accident. He immediately got into the water and rescued the driver and the child from the vehicle. He then secured the car so that it could not slide any further into the lake. The vehicle was totaled, according to the police.

The Brünigstrasse was closed between Lungern Nord and the village of Lungern for around two hours.
