The emergency services were still searching around the clock for more people trapped in the rubble of the school. "We hope to complete the rescue operation today," said Yudhi. 13 people were still missing.
The relatives of those presumed to be trapped had agreed to the use of heavy clearing equipment on Thursday, as there was no hope of any survivors more than 72 hours after the building collapsed.
The multi-storey building of the Koranic school and boarding school in the east of the Indonesian main island of Java partially collapsed on Monday during work on the construction of another storey. At the time of the accident, numerous people were in the school for afternoon prayers.
Initial investigations point to botched construction work as the cause of the accident. According to civil protection, the building collapsed because the foundation pillars gave way under the weight of a fourth floor that was added later.
