For the companies in the Swiss Market Index (SMI), 89 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are generated in the upstream and downstream value chain. This is the conclusion of an analysis by the news agency AWP.

Consequently, Swiss companies are not responsible for a large part of their carbon footprint. In most cases, CO2 emissions are mainly generated by suppliers who produce raw materials for the SMI companies. The use of products sold - such as machines - also has a negative impact on the climate.

The largest emitters in the SMI are the technology group ABB, the cement group Holcim, the building materials group Amrize and the food group Nestlé. Together, they are responsible for by far the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions.
