Nine people had already been evacuated from the Bavona Valley by air on Friday, according to a statement from the Ticino cantonal police.
Due to the forecast of heavy rainfall for Saturday and Sunday, the Ticino emergency services had designated exclusion zones following the landslides and debris avalanches of the previous week. Residents have been evacuated or ordered to evacuate from these zones since Friday.
Several roads have also been closed as a precaution. The access roads to the affected areas have also been closed since midday on Saturday, the communiqué continued.
Only first responders permitted
All those carrying out repair work and transporting work vehicles and machinery, for example, are also affected by these restrictions. According to instructions from the Ticino emergency response team, only first responders are permitted in the closed areas in the event of emergencies.
All measures have been implemented in consultation with the affected municipalities.
The closed areas include the entire Bavona Valley with the exception of the village of San Carlo, which lies at the very back of the valley.
In the upper Maggia Valley, the part of Prato Sornico near the Scudau stream and most of the houses in Piano di Peccia have been closed.
The village of Bola-Croisa near Mogno (Ri di Röd) was also declared a restricted area.
