In the canton of Aargau, wealth taxes will be reduced and child deductions increased. Voters have spoken out in favor of the tax proposal. However, a popular initiative for more equal pay failed.

The tax law was approved on Sunday with a 54.1% share of votes in favor (Yes: 73,740 votes, No: 62,635 votes). The turnout was 31.6 percent, as reported by the State Chancellery of Aargau on Sunday.

The tax law is intended to compensate for the additional income from the higher taxation of real estate and owner-occupied residential property (imputed rental value). This amounts to 150 million francs per year. The new tax law reduces cantonal and municipal revenues by the same amount.

Civic majority prevails

The revision bears the signature of the conservative majority in parliament. According to the SVP, FDP and Center Party, the aim is to reduce the burden on families. The canton is flush with money and can therefore afford the reduction in revenue.

The SP, Greens and EVP spoke of "Brösmeli for the middle class". The latter were paying for the "tax gifts for the rich". Higher child deductions would hardly relieve the burden on middle-class families. Many homeowners would have to pay more - without benefiting from the revision.

On Sunday, however, voters rejected the left-wing popular initiative "Equal pay in the canton of Aargau - now!" with 62.8 percent of the vote against (No: 85,637 votes, Yes: 50,678 votes). The initiative, launched by the umbrella organization ArbeitAargau, aimed to tighten up the wage analyses required under federal law.
