The book, entitled "Book of Days; A Memoir in Moments", is due to be published in 2026. The journalist and John F. Kennedy niece Maria Shriver wrote on social media that she would be honored to publish the memoirs.
Shriver recently published a book of advice on caring for dementia patients through her publishing brand "The Open Field", which was written by the wife of seriously ill star Bruce Willis.
In addition to his life with ALS, Dane will also write about his family and his acting career in the book, according to US media reports. "Every morning when I wake up, I immediately realize that this is the reality - this disease, this challenge, and that's why I'm writing this book," Dane said in a statement, according to People magazine. He wanted to remind readers to live every moment to the fullest.
Dane made his diagnosis public in April
ALS affects the central and peripheral nervous system. Dane made his illness public in April. In an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America" in June, the actor said: "I have a functioning arm". And also said there that he didn't want to give up: "I don't think this is the end of my story," he said.
Dane is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart. The couple have two teenage daughters. In the popular US hospital series "Grey's Anatomy", he played plastic surgeon Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan for six years before leaving the show in 2012. Since 2019, Dane can be seen as the family patriarch in the HBO series "Euphoria".
