In a statement from the Ministry of the Interior of the Democratic Republic of Congo, it was said that the number of dead could still rise - the rescue services had not yet managed to reach all areas of the city of millions affected by the floods. In addition, almost 50 flood victims are reportedly being treated in hospitals.

In some areas of Kinshasa, the drinking water supply was reportedly interrupted and several houses were washed away by the floods since the Ndjili River, which flows through the city of 17 million inhabitants, burst its banks on Saturday night after heavy rainfall. Hundreds of houses were flooded.

Stadium as temporary accommodation for homeless families

The governor of Kinshasa, Daniel Bumba Lubaki, attributed the severe impact of the flood to, among other things, buildings erected without planning permission that were either too close to the river or had construction defects. The government housed families who had become homeless in a stadium, among other places.

On Monday morning, there were signs that the situation was gradually calming down, although several parts of the city were still under water. However, the Congolese Road airport was accessible again after the water had drained away from the access road.
