Tourists can be flown out of the Caribbean island of Jamaica, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Melissa, from Saturday. The country's largest airport, Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay in the northwest of the island, will be open for commercial flights from the weekend, said Transport Minister Daryl Vaz.

According to the Jamaican government, around 25,000 tourists were on the island when "Melissa", a category 5 hurricane, hit the island on Tuesday (local time). A high double-digit number of Germans were also among them, according to the Foreign Office.

At least 50 people lost their lives as a result of the storm in several Caribbean countries. In Jamaica alone, a country with a population of 2.8 million, at least 19 people were killed. According to reports that have yet to be verified, the number could rise by five more victims, said Education and Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon at a press conference. Entire areas have been devastated and many communities isolated.
