A three-day period of mourning has begun in Hong Kong to commemorate the victims of the worst fire in the city's recent history. In the morning hours, Chief Executive John Lee and leading officials of the Special Administrative Region with a population of around 7.5 million observed a three-minute silence. All flags in front of government buildings will be flown at half-mast up to and including Monday.

On Wednesday, a major fire broke out in the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in the Tai Po district, causing several high-rise buildings to go up in flames. According to current information, at least 128 people lost their lives. However, according to the authorities, around 200 people are still missing - so the number of victims could rise considerably.

Searching for bodies instead of survivors

The fire department has now extinguished the flames and stopped its search for possible survivors. The only thing left to do now is to find and identify more bodies in the charred apartments.

At least eleven possible co-responsibles have been arrested as a result of the fire disaster, including several employees of a construction company. During renovation work on the residential complex, apparently unauthorized materials had been used for nets on the scaffolding and some windows had been sealed with polystyrene sheets. According to experts, the highly flammable materials played a key role in the rapid spread of the fire.
