China has reported progress in trade talks following the meeting between US President Donald Trump and head of state and party leader Xi Jinping. Both sides had achieved preliminary results on tariffs, agricultural issues and aircraft.
Details are still being negotiated, the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing said on Saturday. According to the Chinese, both sides are to set up a trade council and an investment council. Tariff reductions for certain products are also to be discussed via the trade council. In principle, there is agreement to reduce tariffs on certain products to a comparable extent. Beijing also hinted at progress in trade with agricultural goods.
In the announcement, the Ministry of Commerce also spoke of agreements on Chinese aircraft purchases in the US and on the supply of aircraft engines and spare parts to China. US President Trump had previously said that China would buy 200 Boeing aircraft.
Overall, the Chinese presentation remained more cautious than that of the US side. While Trump and US representatives held out the prospect of large Chinese purchases after the summit, Beijing gave no concrete details on the scope, value or timing of the agreements.
