Just one day after the fatal train accident in Thailand caused by a falling construction crane, a similar accident has occurred near Bangkok.

Two people were killed and five others injured when a construction crane suddenly collapsed onto a highway in Samut Sakhon this morning (local time). Parts of the steel scaffolding hit two cars, the "Bangkok Post" newspaper quoted the police as saying.

The crane was being used for the construction of a highway bridge, it said. The route is a main artery connecting Bangkok with the south of the country. It is not yet clear what caused the new accident - the second in just 24 hours.

Search for missing persons called off

It was only on Wednesday that a construction crane fell onto a fully occupied train in the province of Nakhon Ratchasima, around 230 kilometers north-east of Bangkok, causing it to derail and partially catch fire. At least 32 people were killed and more than 60 others were injured, some of them seriously.

The search for three people still missing has been called off, the media reported, citing the emergency services. Only fragments of bodies had been recovered and sent in for forensic identification.

Construction companies summoned

The investigation into the cause of the accident is now in full swing. The police are collecting evidence and have summoned representatives of two construction companies involved for questioning, the police emphasized. So far, however, no charges have been brought.

The huge crane was being used to build a railroad bridge for the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail link (HSL), which is to connect Thailand with China via Laos in the future. The project is part of the huge Chinese infrastructure initiative "New Silk Road".

The recovery of the completely destroyed wagons continued to prove difficult. The important railroad line to the north-east of Thailand is currently blocked. Numerous trains had to be rerouted.
