At Colle Major at an altitude of 4.50 meters, where a meteorological research station is operated, plus 1.4 degrees were measured on Saturday at 12.00 noon. A record had already been set at this location in August 2024. Back then, the temperature remained above freezing for 33 hours.

According to forecasts, the coming week will also be characterized by extreme heat - triggered by the African high pressure system "Pluto". This area of high pressure is expected to extend further north between the end of June and the beginning of July - beyond the 60th parallel - and even reach Scotland, Norway and Sweden, according to Italian weather experts.

Sea water very warm

The regional civil defense issued a weather warning for Sardinia. Temperature peaks of up to 41 degrees are expected - initially in the west, then from Monday also in the east of the island. There is no cooling in sight in the evening and at night: tropical nights with lows of over 20 degrees are expected throughout the region.

Florence in particular could experience an extreme heat event in the coming days: Temperatures there are expected to exceed the 39 to 40 degree mark for five consecutive days - an unprecedented event in the city's meteorological history. In the rest of Italy, too, the heated air could make the nights barely cool down: Night-time temperatures of around 30 degrees are possible in coastal regions and the Po Valley.

The sea water is also exceptionally warm: 27 degrees on the Ligurian coast and in the central Tyrrhenian Sea, and even 28 to 29 degrees in places in the southern Tyrrhenian region, according to meteorologists.
