At least 146 people have come forward to the British police in recent months in connection with allegations of abuse against the former owner of the London luxury department store Harrods, Mohamed Al-Fayed. The authorities are continuing their investigation.
They are investigating "those who may have facilitated or enabled Mohamed Al-Fayed's crimes", the British police announced on Wednesday. They did not provide further details on the charges.
The allegations of rape and other sexualized violence against Al-Fayed had increased massively since September last year. The BBC had previously broadcast a documentary entitled "Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods" ("Al-Fayed: The Predator at Harrods"), whereupon more and more alleged victims came forward, most of them former employees at Harrods. Al-Fayed died last year at the age of 94.
The police called on "anyone with information" to come forward - "whether they were directly affected by the actions of Mohamed Al-Fayed or know of others who may have been involved or committed crimes". The authorities are also currently investigating possible errors in previous investigations.
In March, the luxury department store Harrods set up a compensation program for women who worked there or around the department store and accused Al-Fayed of abuse. According to the company, more than 100 alleged victims of the former owner had come forward by the end of July.
Mohamed Al-Fayed was the father of Dodi Al-Fayed, who died in a car accident in Paris in 1997 together with Princess Diana, the divorced wife of the then heir to the British throne Prince Charles.
