The "Wall Street Journal", among others, reported with reference to informed persons that up to 30,000 jobs could be affected by the cuts in several waves.
Amazon pointed out in the announcement that new jobs would be created in other areas at the same time. Most of the affected employees will also be given 90 days to look for other positions within the company.
Conversion for AI
Amazon itself raised the question of why cuts were being made while business was going well. The answer was that we should not forget that the world is changing rapidly. The Group referred to the current applications with artificial intelligence, which allow faster innovations. This is why the company needs to be as lean as possible.
There has been a debate for months about whether AI software such as ChatGPT or Claude from the developer Anthropic, which is supported by Amazon, could make many office jobs redundant. This is because, according to the developer companies, the programs can in some cases perform knowledge tasks and automate administrative processes on their own.
