Amazon generated significantly higher sales in the past quarter, primarily due to strong growth in its cloud division AWS. Group-wide sales climbed by 13 percent year-on-year to 180 billion dollars.

Growth was therefore higher than analysts had expected. The cloud business was particularly impressive. Sales at Amazon Web Services (AWS) climbed by a fifth year-on-year to 33 billion dollars. This was the strongest growth since the end of 2022.

In a conference call with analysts, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy expressed great confidence in the future prospects of the cloud division, which also provides the infrastructure for the Group's efforts in artificial intelligence.

The share price rose by almost 13 percent in after-hours trading. This means the stock is set to reach a record high on Friday.

Investment in AI company drives profit higher

By contrast, the operating result stagnated at 17.4 billion dollars due to special charges for the settlement of a legal dispute with the FTC and the reduction of 14,000 jobs announced a few days ago. Without these, the operating result would have risen to 21.7 billion dollars.

At the bottom line, profit rose by almost 39 percent to just over 21 billion dollars. Among other things, the Group benefited from its investment in AI start-up Anthropic. The investment led to an extraordinary profit contribution of 9.5 billion dollars before tax.
