Amazon removed over 15 million counterfeit products from circulation last year. That was more than twice as many as in 2023.

The head of Amazon's anti-counterfeiting department, Kebharu Smith, explained the increase in part due to better detection in distribution centers and campaigns in countries where the items are produced.

In the process, 99 percent of product offers classified as suspicious were stopped by Amazon before a brand manufacturer had to report them. Such reports have decreased by 35 percent since 2020, according to the annual management report of the world's largest online retailer. The number of automatically blocked product offers has risen by 250 percent during this time.

Billions of data points recorded

Amazon is also increasingly relying on the use of artificial intelligence to combat counterfeiting. According to the company, billions of data points are recorded and compared on the platform every day. These include IP addresses, logos, search terms and changes to product descriptions.

The counterfeiters use sophisticated methods. These include sending counterfeit items and their brand logos separately and only putting them together later. For example, car parts were transported from China to the USA in this way. They were seized in nine truckloads in New Jersey.
