In the Polish capital, Amherd was informed about the status of negotiations between Switzerland and the EU, as announced by the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) in the evening. The outstanding issues were also addressed.

According to the DDPS, the President of the Swiss Confederation emphasized that balanced solutions were required in order to stabilize and further develop bilateral relations for the benefit of both sides and to gain domestic political support in Switzerland and the EU. The Polish President outlined the planned priorities of his country's EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2025.

The exchange on the security situation was therefore primarily dedicated to the war in Ukraine and the demining conference that opened the same day in Lausanne. Other topics included geopolitical developments, in particular the situation in the Middle East, the state of multilateralism, i.e. cross-border cooperation, and the second Swiss presidency of the UN Security Council this month.

According to the DDPS, both sides emphasized their excellent relations, which are characterized by close political, economic, cultural and scientific contacts. Of the 15 countries that benefit from Switzerland's contributions to individual EU members, Poland receives the highest amount: CHF 320.1 million until 2029.

On Friday, Amherd will hold talks with Szymon Hołownia and Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, who chair the two Polish chambers of parliament.
