The Gösgen nuclear power plant in Däniken SO will remain off the grid longer than planned after the annual overhaul. According to the nuclear power plant operator, this is due to the creation and review of verifications that were created using new calculation methods for the feedwater system.

The replacement of non-return valves in the feedwater system is planned as part of the technical modernization, announced Kernkraftwerk Gösgen-Däniken AG (KKG) on Wednesday. New calculation methods were used for this.
These had shown that in the event of a pipe rupture, overloads or pressure peaks could occur in individual areas of the feedwater piping system in the non-nuclear part of the plant.
Based on calculations and the current condition of the pipelines, such a pipe rupture can be virtually ruled out for the coming decades, as KKG states in the press release.
Supervisory authority examines
The findings were reported to the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (Ensi). According to KKG, it prepared comprehensive evidence of safe plant operation. Once this has been checked and approved by Ensi, the plant will be restarted.
The Gösgen nuclear power plant was shut down on May 24 for the annual inspection. The inspection was originally scheduled to last around one month. During this time, 36 of the 177 fuel elements were replaced and numerous maintenance and inspection tasks were carried out.
The Gösgen nuclear power plant began commercial operation in 1979.
