On Monday morning, Pfingstweidstrasse in the west of Zurich was flooded when a pipe with a diameter of 30 centimetres dating back to 1963 burst. Within half an hour, an estimated 2.5 million liters of water flowed to the surface, as a spokesperson for the Zurich water supply told the Keystone-SDA news agency. Blick" reported on the incident online in the afternoon.
At the Toni-Areal streetcar stop, the road surface was washed out and raised, said a spokesman for the Zurich city police. 15 to 18 meters would have to be replaced. The water also washed debris onto the road, which is now closed to all traffic for the time being.
The police received the report of the burst water pipe at around 8.15 a.m. on Monday morning. The fire department operation lasted until around 10 am.
A burst water pipe had already occurred in Zurich's District 10 shortly after 6 a.m. on Whit Sunday, above the Oerlikon-Wipkingen railroad line. Several houses were left without drinking water and Schutz&Rettung had to carry out extensive clean-up work.
