The renewed volcanic eruption in Iceland has come to an end after around two and a half weeks. This was confirmed by a civil defense drone overflight, during which no more eruption activity was observed in the area on the Reykjanes Peninsula southwest of Reykjavik, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

The eruption thus lasted 18 days and was the second largest of the seven eruptions since December 2023 in terms of area.
The Reykjanes Peninsula in the southwest of the North Atlantic island has been experiencing repeated volcanic eruptions since 2021, during which an elongated crack in the earth opens up, from which glowing red lava gushes out for days on end. In the most recent eruption, the fissure was initially estimated to be three kilometers long before the volcanic activity was later concentrated in three newly formed craters.
The lava masses also overflowed onto the large parking lot of the Blue Lagoon geothermal baths, which are particularly popular with tourists to Iceland. The baths have been open again since the beginning of this week. This time there was no danger to the nearby coastal town of Grindavík, which was evacuated once again.
