As a result, sanctions have been imposed which will come into force shortly. These include restrictions on US exports and financial aid for the Sudanese government.
State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce explained that Washington is calling on the Sudanese government to "cease the use of chemical weapons and comply with its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention". The use of such weapons is prohibited worldwide under the War Weapons Convention. It was not initially stated when and where the chemical weapons were used in Sudan.
UN: 13 million people on the run
The army of military ruler Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF militia of his former deputy Mohammed Hamdan Daglo have been engaged in a bloody power struggle in Sudan for more than two years. The north and east of the country are largely under the control of the military government, while the RSF controls large areas of the south and almost the entire western region of Darfur.
According to the United Nations, tens of thousands of people have already been killed in the conflict and 13 million people are displaced. The European Union speaks of 15 million displaced persons. Both the army and the RSF militia are accused of war crimes.
