A total of around 40 people are said to have been on the night bus from Hyderabad to Bengaluru, most of whom were asleep at the time of the accident. Eleven people have been identified so far, said police spokesman Vikrant Patil. The identification of the other people is proving difficult as the bodies had severe burns, Patil said. 18 passengers were able to get out of the burning bus to safety, police said. Two members of the crew are missing.
The accident in Kurnool is the second serious bus accident in India within a few days. On October 14, a bus accident in northwest India claimed the lives of 22 people. Many passenger buses in India are operated by private transport companies, which often work with low profit margins and do not comply with safety and maintenance standards.
