At least 20 people have died in floods in Bolivia in South America. Ten more are missing, as Defense Minister Marcelo Salinas said in a television interview. A river in the east of the country burst its banks after heavy rainfall. Masses of water and mud damaged houses and roads.

Flooding caused major damage, particularly in the municipality of El Torno in the Santa Cruz region. According to the civil defense, around 30 people were injured. The government declared a state of emergency for the affected region. Helicopters and search teams are searching for the missing. Hundreds of people were brought to safety.

"It was an unusually strong flood," said the minister. In this year's rainy season, the weather phenomena El Niño and La Niña are occurring at the same time, as has not been the case in Bolivia for a century. President Rodrigo Paz warned of further storms in the coming months.
