Heavy monsoon rains in southern India have triggered landslides with at least eight deaths, according to official reports. At least 70 people were brought to hospitals with injuries from the affected Wayanad district in the state of Kerala, said Kerala Health Minister Veena George.

She feared that the death toll could rise. Hundreds of people may still be buried under the masses of earth in the hilly area, wrote the newspaper "The Hindu".

According to the newspaper, several landslides had hit villages and roads were partially interrupted. Rain hindered the rescue teams, the minister added. Emergency services were therefore brought to the scene by helicopter. A child was among the dead, wrote "The Hindu". No further details were initially known.
