It was found in the same place where a couple had previously been reported missing. Hours later, it was confirmed that it was the wife, as the Europa Press news agency reported, citing the Guardia Civil police unit and the fire department.

The couple had been on their way to work in an off-road vehicle on Tuesday morning when the car was caught in the floodwaters of a stream that had burst its banks in the municipality of Constantina, north-east of Seville. The car was found without its two occupants. The woman's body was discovered about 400 meters away from the car in the bushes, said the deputy of the central government in Seville, Francisco Toscano. The search for the husband will continue after daybreak on Wednesday. A cyclist is also missing, as the newspaper "El País" reported.

Hundreds of people brought to safety as a precaution

Numerous roads were no longer passable and train services were also disrupted in places. In view of the dangerously rising water levels of many rivers, hundreds of people were brought to safety as a precautionary measure, including in the town of Cártama near the Andalusian city of Málaga.

In the autonomous region of Murcia in south-eastern Spain, several people had to be rescued from rivers that had burst their banks, as Europa Press reported. Footage from state broadcaster RTVE showed cars being swept away by masses of water. The Guardia Civil also posted video footage on X of flooded highways and rescued dogs, among other things.

Some images were reminiscent of the severe flooding on October 29, 2024, when more than 230 people lost their lives, most of them in the Valencia region.
