The landslide occurred at around 3.20 a.m. local time on Tuesday night after more than 24 hours of uninterrupted rainfall. Rescue work was temporarily interrupted due to persistent rain and the risk of landslides, but continued on Wednesday with over 120 emergency services.

Thousands of people taken to emergency shelters

La Negra, which is actually a small watercourse in the Antioquia region in the north-west of the country, reportedly overflowed and caused a large section of slope to slide. "All available resources of the Antioquia Disaster Service and the regional government are at the disposal of the community to deal with this tragedy," wrote Andrés Julián Rendón, governor of the department of Antioquia, which includes the metropolitan region of Medellín, on Platform X.

Informal housing estates on hillsides are particularly affected, many of them without adequate building and risk protection. According to the authorities, there were no acute warnings for the affected area, although it is considered to be at high risk. Around 1,000 people were taken to nearby emergency shelters.
