According to the Jakarta Globe, 29 passengers have been evacuated so far and three deaths have been confirmed. The authorities warned that the number of victims could still rise, as rescue work was ongoing and there were apparently still people in the damaged carriages.
The newspaper also reported that images circulated on social media showed heavily damaged parts of the train, including a women's compartment in which passengers are said to have been trapped. Rescue workers reportedly had to cut their way through bent metal to reach trapped passengers.
According to the report, the state railroad operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) stated that evacuation measures were continuing together with the police and other authorities. Injured people were taken to nearby hospitals, some of which were overloaded, according to the newspaper.
The cause of the collision is still unclear, according to the Jakarta Globe. Rail traffic on the affected route remains suspended for the time being.
