The number of deaths following heavy flooding caused by heavy rain in the south-east of the USA has risen to at least twelve. According to Governor Andy Beshear, at least eleven people have died in the US state of Kentucky alone, which has been affected by flooding throughout the state. Beshear said that a seven-year-old child was among the dead.

One person was also killed in the state of Georgia, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper, citing local authorities. A tree had fallen on a house.

US President Donald Trump had declared a state of emergency at the request of Kentucky. Tens of thousands of households on many federal highways were without power and drinking water.

Snowfall expected well into the southern states

A race against time has begun for the utility companies, because: Meteorologists do not have good news for the millions affected in the region. After the rain, freezing cold and snowfall are expected well into the southern states over the next few days.

The rain, which began on Saturday and was accompanied by squalls, affected several states - including Tennessee, Ohio, Georgia, Arkansas, Virginia and West Virginia as well as Kentucky.
