The attackers had gained access to sensitive information such as customer names, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers and birthdays, the Australian company Blue Chip announced on Wednesday. According to Blue Chip, data from six million customers is stored on the platform it operates.
It is currently investigating how many were affected by the hacker attack. In its own words, the company assumes that it is "a significant proportion".
No passport numbers stored
According to Qantas, neither credit card data nor passport numbers were stored in the blue chip system. There were no fears of any impact on flight operations or the airline's security, it said.
According to Quantas Managing Director Vanessa Hudson, the national cyber security coordinator was informed of the incident. The post was created by the Australian government in 2023 following a series of spectacular cyberattacks that affected the personal data of millions of people at the time.
A series of high-profile cyberattacks had raised concerns about the protection of personal data in recent years. Qantas apologized in 2024 after a glitch in its mobile app exposed the names and travel details of some passengers.
