Weather experts in Austria are expecting massive amounts of rain with flooding and landslides in the coming days. From Friday to Tuesday, 100 to 200 liters of rain per square meter could fall in most of the Alpine country, according to the state meteorology institute Geosphere Austria. In parts of Lower Austria and Upper Austria, it could even exceed 300 liters. Along the Danube, emergency services are preparing for floods that occur every 10 to 15 years, according to the authorities. Among other things, mobile flood protection systems were set up and sandbags were filled.

Concerts and football matches canceled

Travelers had to expect delays at Vienna Airport on Friday. "Due to the current bad weather conditions at various European locations and in Vienna, there are currently isolated delays in air traffic from Vienna," said the airport.

In the mountains, snow caused local road closures. The province of Salzburg warned that there was a risk of avalanches above 800 meters. However, flood experts saw the fact that the snow fell down to relatively low altitudes as a positive. This is because the precipitation will only run off when it gets warmer again.

Due to the storm situation, outdoor concerts and football matches were canceled, including a performance by the German band Böhse Onkelz scheduled for Saturday in Wels.
