The trial into the death of a doctor who campaigned for coronavirus vaccinations has begun in Wels, Austria.

The public prosecutor's office has accused a 61-year-old German of being involved in her death with his threatening messages to the doctor. However, the man from Bavaria pleaded not guilty to the charge of making a dangerous threat, his lawyers said.

The public prosecutor's office assumes that the man was partly responsible for the suicide of doctor Lisa-Maria Kellermayr in July 2022. "We are watching you," the public prosecutor quoted from one of the messages to the Austrian woman. The defendant had announced that he would bring Kellermayr before a future "people's tribunal" and put her behind bars. He faces up to ten years in prison. A verdict is expected on April 9.

Threatening letter from an as yet unknown sender

According to the public prosecutor's office and his defense, the Bavarian admits that he sent several emails and Twitter messages to Kellermayr in 2022. However, the letters did not contain any threats. "The fate of Ms. Kellermayr does not leave us or our client cold," the man's lawyer told the German Press Agency.

The 61-year-old's legal team pointed out that Kellermayr had, however, received death threats from another suspect. However, he has not yet been identified.

Kellermayr had promoted the usefulness of the coronavirus vaccination in her work as a doctor and in media appearances. She had received hostility and threats as a result.
