Heavy snowfall surprised hundreds of hikers in the Himalayan region at the weekend. According to reports, tents were crushed by masses of snow and paths became impassable.

According to the authorities, the hiking groups were at an altitude of 4,900 meters - near the eastern slope of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain at 8,849 meters. The authorities had already announced on Sunday evening that around 350 people had been brought to a meeting point in the village of Qudang. According to Xinhua, the remaining hikers have now also arrived there.

Other regions in China also affected

Other regions in western China were also affected by the sudden onset of winter. In the neighboring province of Qinghai, a total of 251 hikers were rescued after days of searching. According to the authorities, one person died there due to hypothermia and altitude sickness. Hiking and camping activities were also suspended in parts of the Xinjiang region for safety reasons.

The snowstorms hit the affected areas during the "Golden Week" around the Chinese national holiday, when a particularly large number of people travel to the mountains.
