The authorities made the discovery on January 24. Cantonal veterinarian Pierre-François Gobat confirmed on Saturday to the Keystone-SDA news agency a corresponding report by the French-speaking Swiss television station RTS on Friday evening.
"We have ordered measures to rescue all the cattle that can be saved - that means feeding and watering them. We then confiscated all the animals so that they could be properly cared for," he said. The relevant authorities would now draw up a criminal file.
The farmer was banned from selling his milk to cheese dairies in the region as the quality of the milk was not deemed to be compliant. The cantonal veterinarian did not wish to provide any further information due to the ongoing proceedings.
Cattle were mainly kept on the farm. The authorities also found two or three goats alive.
