The federal government, cantons and municipalities are responding to the high number of femicides this year. Places are to be created in shelters and emergency accommodation, violence prevention is to be stepped up and in-depth analysis of cases is to be introduced.
In the first half of 2025, 18 women and girls were killed by men in Switzerland. The situation is alarming, wrote the Federal Office for Gender Equality (FOGE) in a press release on Thursday. In addition to the roadmap on domestic and sexual violence and the "Stop Femicide" research project, which have been in place for some time, further measures are urgently needed.
At an extraordinary meeting, the federal government, cantons and municipalities agreed, for example, to close existing gaps in the number of places in shelters and emergency accommodation. The aim is to quickly and concretely strengthen institutional support for victims of violence and perpetrators.
An interim assessment will be made in the fall.
