The crisis in the automotive industry has long been felt in this country too. Currently, for example, the industrial group SFS is planning to close its plant in Flawil SG for good. The planned move had already been reported previously. Of the 110 jobs affected, around a third can be relocated to the main site in Heerbrugg SG. For 75 jobs, however, the decision means the end.
The plant closure is a reaction to a significant drop in demand in the European automotive industry market, the company wrote in a statement. A consultation process has now been completed. Despite several suggestions from employees, no viable alternatives to the planned plant closure had emerged.
Social plan to mitigate redundancies
The 75 redundancies now announced will be made in stages between April 2026 and mid-2027, the press release continued. The management is working on a social plan to mitigate the economic consequences of the redundancies. Among other things, this will include support for further job searches and long-service bonuses. All apprentices in Flawil will be given the opportunity to continue and complete their training at the company.
SFS produces various components for the automotive industry at its Flawil site. The cold forming business with 35 jobs will be relocated to Heerbrugg.
